Punk is Definitely NOT Dead
DePaul University
Typography Systems, 2023
Jacob Goebel
This project was created for a typography systems class, which specialized in helping students practice text layouts for magazines and other publications. Our task in this project was to make a small book, using bodycopy from different articles all based around a topic of our choosing. We then had to print and bind the book with a method of our choice, using dimensions no smaller than 5x7.
I chose to do my book on the topic of punk design, as a lot of grunge textures and things from that era started resurfacing at the time; hence the title. I wanted to add a physical aspect to the grunge of it, so I disconnected the spine from the rest of the book and left that visible. I also hand-bound the book using waxed thread and a Japanese book binding method. The random typography was a blend of the typefaces we were allowed to use for the project to create a one-of-a-kind typeface for the cover. The rest of the book included hand drawn pull quote quotation marks, torn paper textures, and halftoned pictures of different punk bands not referenced in the articles.
