Art on the Mart Installation
Type In Motion, 2023

Jacob Goebel
In this class project, we were tasked with creating a motion typography piece for Merchandise Mart as part of an Art on the Mart installation. We had to pick one topic that related to Chicago in some way, and I chose to talk about the food scene in Chicago
I used a color palette generated from the Chicago flag, as well as dining iconography and an Illustrator trace of the Chicago skyline that I shot on my camera. The layout of the motion was guided by the shape of the building, using the odd shape of the canvas to add intrigue to the different parts of the animation. I used a rounded serif typeface to reference the many logos of restaurants around Chicago that use similar typefaces as well as giving a small nod to the hand-painted sign culture of Chicago. The animation also loops, starting and ending on the same Chicago star red we all know and love.
In the process of creating this graphic, I storyboarded all the major moments first and let that guide my decisions moving forward. I focused on using the unique shape of Merchandise Mart to make natural borders for my animations.
